Stevia

What is Stevia?

Stevia is a species of herbs found in the sunflower family. Its origins trace back to tropical and subtropical regions from South America and parts of Asia. Stevia Rebaudiana, the sweetest stevia species, has been harvested for centuries for its sugar-like taste. In the early 1970′s, Japan began cultivating stevia in an effort to reduce consumption of cyclamate and saccharin. Stevia received approval by the FDA as a food additive in the United States in 2008 and has received GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) designation. At maturity, the shrub grows to about three feet tall.

Stevia leaf extract has a sweet taste that is around 300x sweeter than sugar, so only a small amount is needed to sweeten. Stevia is a sugar-free alternative to sweetening your favorite foods and beverages as it does not increase blood sugar levels and is zero calories, making it a great keto and diabetic-friendly sweetener. Pyure is the first USDA Organic Certified stevia brand.

Is Pyure Stevia safe for diabetics?

One of the benefits of stevia is that it's a sugar-free sweetener with a low glycemic index, so it won't cause any spikes in blood sugar levels or affect glucose response. Our other sweeteners and products are also low-glycemic-index.

Where does Stevia come from?

Over 90% of the stevia plants worldwide are grown in China. Pyure sources pure stevia leaf extract and erythritol from USDA Organic Certified crops. Pyure maintains strict quality and food safety controls. Pyure’s manufacturers are GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) , a program that helps ensure food safety and quality throughout the entire food chain.

All of Pyure's retail products are packaged in the United States, and are GFSI food safety and quality certified.

How is Pyure Organic Stevia Processed?

The leaves from Pyure Stevia plants are harvested from USDA Organic Certified crops, dried and then steeped in water, similar to steeping tea. The liquid is filtered and separated from the plant material, creating stevia leaf extract. The extract is then purified and dried to obtain high purity stevia leaf extract.

Why is Pyure Stevia Blended with Other Ingredients?

Due to the intense sweetness of Pyure Stevia (200 to 300 times the sweetness of sugar), only a small amount of stevia is needed. To combat the airborne nature of stevia extract, on certain items we may blend Organic Stevia with other low intensity sweeteners like Organic Erythritol. These ingredients when paired together balance out the bitter taste associated with stevia, while making the product more user-friendly when substituting stevia for sugar in recipes.

If you’re looking for stevia without erythritol, we recommend our Simply Sweet Liquid Stevia Extract, Vanilla Liquid Extract, and our Stevia Extract Powder.

Will Stevia Break My Fast?

No. Stevia is sugar-free, zero carb, zero calorie, zero glycemic index and does not contain any protein, so consuming stevia in moderation does not break a fast. In fact, it is unlikely to interrupt or reduce any of the benefits of fasting (including ketosis).

Should Pyure Organic Liquid Stevia Be Refrigerated?

Pyure Organic Liquid Stevia drops are perfect to throw in your purse for on-the-go use, however for best results it is recommended that they be refrigerated in between uses.

Monk Fruit

What is Monk Fruit?

Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Go, is a small, round fruit native to Southeast Asia that comes from the melon family and is used as a sugar substitute. It’s named for the Buddhist monks that have used it since the 7th century and is 150-250 times sweeter than sugar. Pyure Monk fruit is an organic, granulated sweetener that is keto friendly, sugar-free, and has a zero glycemic index. Some prefer the taste of monk fruit over stevia sweetener. Pyure’s Monk Fruit Sweetener is GFSI food safety and quality certified. For more information, check out our blog post on Monk Fruit vs. Stevia.

Allulose

What is Allulose?

Allulose is a low-calorie carbohydrate that occurs naturally in small quantities in foods like figs, raisins, and maple syrup. It's considered a rare sugar and has only about 1/10th the calories of sugar. Allulose sweetener is used as a sugar substitute, free from sugar alcohols, and is 70% as sweet as sugar. It is keto-friendly, gluten-free, and has a low glycemic index.

Pyure’s Organic Allulose Sweetener is derived from organic non-GMO corn, which undergoes a process of breaking down into starch and fructose. The fructose is then converted to Allulose through an enzymatic process. Our Allulose Sweetener is GFSI food safety and quality certified. For more information about Allulose, check out our blog post, “What is Allulose?”

Erythritol

What is Organic Erythritol?

Pyure Organic Erythritol is a sugar-alcohol that is derived from Non-GMO corn through the process of fermentation. Organic Erythritol is non-nutritive (meaning it provides no nutritional benefits) and digests very quickly through the body, leaving little to no effects on blood sugar levels. Organic Erythritol is found naturally in many foods and beverages like grapes, pears, mushrooms, wine and yogurt.

Pyure was the first-to-market with USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified Erythritol Sweetener. Our erythritol is granulated, keto-friendly, has a low glycemic index, and is also sold as a bulk ingredient in our Commercial Ingredients line.

Does Pyure have a statement on the recent study of erythritol?

Since Pyure was founded, we’ve been committed to providing our customers with a safe and quality product to help people reduce their consumption of sugar and, hopefully, avoid its harmful effects.  We value the concerns of our customers, and we share in your concern over the recent news suggesting that erythritol might be linked to certain health conditions.

Erythritol is approved for use in more than 50 countries.  For over two decades, the Food and Drug Administration has allowed food manufacturers to use erythritol for various uses, including as a sugar substitute.  During this time, erythritol has been commercially produced and enjoyed by consumers looking for effective ways to reduce their sugar intake.

It is our understanding that scientists, doctors and researchers have not reached any conclusion establishing that erythritol cannot be safely consumed by the general public.  However, if you have any concerns about your consumption of erythritol or about how your diet may affect your overall health, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider.

Our products are Certified Organic and Non-GMO, which set us apart from other brands. If you are looking for sweetener that contains stevia without erythritol, or an erythritol substitute, our Simply Sweet Liquid Stevia Extract, Vanilla Liquid Stevia Extract, and our Stevia Leaf Extract are all free from erythritol.

Does Pyure Liquid Stevia contain erythritol? What’s the difference between alcohol and sugar alcohol?

Pyure Organic Liquid Stevia contains food-grade organic alcohol. This is not to be confused with Erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol. For consumers looking for sweeteners without erythritol, we recommend Pyure Liquid Stevia Extract Simply Sweet, Pyure Liquid Stevia Extract Vanilla, and Stevia Extract Powder Jar.
